      Muonionalusta Meteorite: 6 Interesting Facts

Muonionalusta meteorite is a fascinating material that has become more and more popular in the jewelry industry over the years. Meteorite is a staple to the Patrick Adair Designs brand and we incorporate it in a variety of ways. This extraterrestrial metal is extremely unique and literally out of this world.  Learning about the different types of meteorite used in jewelry pieces will be very useful when shopping for meteorite engagement rings. Keep on reading for some interesting facts related to muonaionlusta meteorite. After all, who doesn't want to own something from outer space that is billions of years old?

      What is Muonionalusta Meteorite

Muonionalusta meteorite are beautifully unique iron based meteorites that can be used in a wide range of applications including meteorite jewelry

In addition to being beautiful, symbolic, and interesting, some couples choose black wedding rings as a practical necessity. Many people work in jobs that use manual labor such as construction and manufacturing. These professions use tools and machinery that could scratch metal bands and crush even the hardest gemstones.

It would be sad to forego wearing a symbol of love because of practicality while on the job, but many people are forced to do this. However, durable black metal or rings are growing in popularity because of their hardness and strength.

These rings can be worn in all sorts of conditions without breaking, which can provide peace of mind to the wearer.

      1. What are Muonionalusta Meteorites Made Of?

This is one of the largest found muonionalusta meteorites found

Despite its wondrous origins, meteorites are made out of elements recognizable to us. Muonionalusta meteorites contain meteoric iron and nickel; its nickel concentration being high enough to produce a very unique interweaving cross-section like pattern. This pattern is known as the Widmanstatten pattern, discovered by Alois von Widmanstatten in 1808 and is a phenomenon exclusive only to meteorites. The patterns, although looking like a fairly simple cross-section of lines, is actually a purely randomized pattern that are unique to each and every meteorite and cannot be replicated!

      2.  What is the Difference Between a Meteor and a Meteorite?

Muonionalusta meteorite is not a meteor as meteors need to land on Earth to be classified as a meteorite

The difference between a meteor and a meteorite is solely dependent on where the parent asteroid is in its journey! There are meteoroids which are simply asteroids that peacefully float in space minding its own business. These aren’t to be confused with meteors, which are the same asteroids that burn as they penetrate the earth’s atmosphere. Meteors are what we commonly know as “shooting stars”. Because meteors burn, many of these disintegrate before they even reach the surface of the earth. The ones that do survive and make the landing are what we call meteorites. They're the ones used in space jewelry.

      3. How Many Meteorites Hit the Earth Every Day?

Muonionalusta meteorites land on Earth quite frequently, mainly finding themselves in uninhabited areas

It surely isn’t everyday that shooting stars occur for us to witness, but research tells us that every year there are 6,100 meteors large enough to make it to the earth’s surface without burning completely. This roughly translates to about 16-17 meteorite fragments hitting earth everyday, mostly landing in uninhabited places. Every now and then, however, some of these meteorites land in populated places all over the world and most definitely catch the attention of the locals!

      4. Are Muonionalusta Meteorites Magnetic?

Meteorites are magnetic and its magnetic properties are a great way to tell if a meteorite is real or fake! The amount of iron present in meteorites vary, so it wouldn’t be a surprise if some magnets have a stronger attraction towards meteorites than others! Authentic meteorite jewelry should at least have enough iron content to attract even a small magnet, but don’t be surprised if for some reason your magnet is almost inseparable from your meteorite.

      5. Do Meteorite Rings Rust?

Since muonionalusta meteorite rings are mainly composed of iron and nickel, they are prone to rust. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, though! Don’t be surprised if your meteorite jewelry develops rust in some areas as time goes by! If anything, a rusting meteorite proves even further that what you have is authentic, and finding a way to clean off the rust takes little to no time at all. Just like any other sentimental piece of jewelry you own, cleaning your meteorite ring will without a doubt ensure that your ring will last. You wouldn’t need to look any further for tips either, because we prepared a tutorial on how to take care of your meteorite jewelry for you!

      6. Are Muonionalusta Meteorite Rings Durable?

At Patrick Adair Designs we handcraft a wide range of muonionalusta meteorite rings including this Meteorite Ring with Real Gold Liner

Think about it, these meteorites not only survived landing on the earth’s surface, but they’ve also somehow not fully disintegrated despite burning upon entering the earth's atmosphere. Not to mention their high iron and nickel content, meteorites are not generally known for being the ones that break or lose their shape easily! When matched with a durable ring setting, you’re sure to have a meteorite that is both one of a kind and is also well protected from dents, scratches, and other possible damages!
