Gold and Meteorite: The Perfect Combination

The marriage of two materials in jewelry has always been a practice in the industry. Some combinations are made to enhance, support, or protect other materials from the damages due to daily wear and tear. Other matches are made to produce very beautiful and elaborate designs that are meant to catch people’s attention or send a message. The combination of gold and meteorite does exactly this to create the wonderful gold meteorite ring.

      The Meaning of Gold

Gold is associated with luck, prosperity, fertility, and wisdom making it a perfect material to combine with Meteorite

Gold has a rich history, spanning centuries from various cultures. It is and always has been a material coveted by many. Kings, Queens, and other prestigious figures have adorned themselves and their palaces with gold. Its association to spirituality is also equally strong and apparent, as it is used not only for places of worship, but also for materials and artifacts that help carry out sacred practices.

Its symbolism and meaning can surely vary based on whichever aspect you wish to see it as, but it is most popularly known for symbolizing wealth, status, and abundance. Back then, money was in the form of gold coins rather than paper. Other cultures have made known their own meanings of gold, associating the material with luck, prosperity, fertility, and wisdom.

      What is a Meteorite?

Meteorite is the core material of gold meteorite rings, and is a out of this world kind of material

A meteorite is nothing else but a shooting star that has landed on the surface of the earth. They are not to be confused with meteors or asteroids, despite having been those things prior to landing on earth. Their distinctions come mainly from where these extraterrestrial rocks are in their journey. They initially start off as asteroids that float peacefully in space until they  penetrate the earth’s atmosphere and succumb to the pull of gravity, making them burn as they fall–these are meteors, otherwise known as shooting stars. Some meteors do not survive, as the flames could consume these meteors fully. The ones that do survive are known as meteorites. Today, there has been over 60,000 types of meteorites discovered!

When looking for meteorite jewelry, make sure that the meteorite that you have is a real meteorite. There are certain tell-tale signs that will show you that what you have is a real meteorite. The most common sign that you have a real meteorite is that it has a characteristic pattern called Widmanstatten pattern which is unique in each genuine meteorite that you find. To find more tips on owning an actual meteorite, read our Meteorite Ring Guide.

Why are Gold Meteorite Rings the Perfect Combination?

Combining gold and meteorite in jewelry, especially as gold meteorite wedding bands, is no new innovative discovery, but it certainly is one that works very well for multiple reasons. History tells us that even during the early days of the meteorite’s discovery, materials like gold and silver have been handcrafted and adorned alongside them to create a dazzling contrast between the meteorite’s dark, patterned surface with the smoothness and shine of gold.

Before achieving these contrasting patterns, however, the meteorite requires an etching process to bring out the pattern ingrained in its chemical composition. Acids and other strong chemicals are used in order for this to take place, chemicals that may not react well to some precious metals, with the exception of gold. Gold, in particular, is known to be one of the least reactive elements, capable of withstanding the harsh chemicals and acids used for the meteorite etching, all while maintaining its pristine and shine.
