Forged Carbon Fiber: What is Carbon Fiber?
Forged Carbon Fiber: What is Carbon Fiber?
What is Carbon Fiber? Carbon fiber is used in so many different applications today. Carbon fiber is particularly attractive in this day and age due to its color and properties. It has a sleek black color with amazing, unique patterns depending on the type of carbon fiber and how it's made. It's also extremely durable and lightweight, making it ideal to use in the aerospace industry and car industry. There are many types of carbon fiber from standard carbon fiber, to marbled carbon fiber, to forged carbon fiber. What differentiates these carbon fibers and how are they made?
What is Carbon Fiber? How It's Made
Carbon fiber is made in an extremely intricate way. Carbon fiber is a stiff material that's made from extremely thin fibers of carbon atoms. These carbon fiber strands are made by heating up a precursor material, such as rayon or petroleum pitch. It eventually becomes a liquid in this superior manufacturing process, where the heat drives off non-carbon atoms. It's then drawn out into long strands thinner than human hair to be cooled. They're then bonded together to form sheets of carbon atoms. Different patterns of this material depend on how the sheets of carbon atoms are woven during the design process. Marbled, twill weave, and forged carbon fiber are all similar in chemical bonding properties with differing mechanical properties and physically desirable traits.
The process of making a ring is actually pretty simple. Once the raw material's woven into the desired shape, it's then covered with a coating resin material. Coated fibers gives it a shiny and polished look that shimmers similarly to traditional materials like gold. After the excess resin mix has been applied, the ring is then put into a mould cavity and heated until the actual resin cures with just the right resin ratio. Once the ring has cooled after its resin infusion process, the carbon fiber is ready to be worn.
The end result is always a strong material for tons of different applications. The capabilities of carbon fiber are almost endless in terms of performance. For example, commercial grade carbon fiber sheets are often used in the automotive industry with specialty applications and structural components. It's used in wind turbines, robotics, and the aerospace industries because it's strong and lightweight. Carbon-fiber properties are also used in sporting goods. You might also see different forms of carbon fiber it in some high-end electronics too. They're an extremely versatile material that you'll see everywhere. You'll see carbon fiber on car hoods through traditional carbon fiber sheets, protective phone casings, and jewelry. When it comes to wedding rings, the process is the same. In this awesome article, we'll go over the different kinds of carbon fiber, why you should own carbon fiber jewelry, and what options we have in store for you.
Different Carbon Fibers: Forged Carbon Fiber
Forged carbon fiber has superior strength and durability compared to most versions of carbon fiber. It's also less likely to break or crack under pressure. It's an ideal material with awesome mechanical performance for more complicated structural designs. You can think of this as a more high-performance carbon fiber.
This is in contrast to our twill weave carbon fiber. Twill weave carbon fiber is a type of carbon fiber that has a distinctive twill weave pattern. Forged carbon fiber is made by compressing and heating carbon fiber under high pressure. This is often done in a two-part compression mold and is more durable than other forms of carbon fiber. It also has a more distinct, visual pattern which makes it more appealing for jewelry and decor.
Marbled carbon fiber is a type of carbon fiber that features a unique, marbled appearance. Different jewelers will use different styles of carbon fiber for their wide variety of designs, though the strongest and most durable option is forged carbon fiber. But regardless of which carbon fiber you pick, you're undoubtedly going to get a great wedding band with little to no maintenance required. But is this the right material for you?
Carbon Fiber Rings: The Growing Demand for Carbon Fiber in the Jewelry Industry
Advantages to owning a carbon fiber wedding band:
1) Carbon fiber has a high tensile strength, similar to gold.
2) Carbon fiber has fantastic heat resistance, but it isn't invincible.
3) Traditional carbon fiber composites are very lightweight and comfortable to wear.
4) Carbon fiber rings are waterproof and will not rust or corrode.
5) Carbon fiber is hypoallergenic, great for those with metal allergies and sensitive skin.
6) Carbon Fiber has great thermal conductivity. This makes it perfect for active people who're afraid of overheating.

Disadvantages to owning a carbon fiber wedding band:
1) Carbon fiber conducts electricity.
2) Carbon fiber only comes in a black color
Caring For Your Carbon Fiber Jewelry
Despite its drawbacks, carbon fiber jewelry is extremely easy to take care of. Since carbon fiber is waterproof, you can safely clean it with warm water and mild soap. Use a soft cloth to scrub away any oils and filth. If you notice that your carbon fiber jewelry is becoming dull, apply jewelry polish wipes. This will help bring it back to life.

Carbon Fiber Inspired Rings: Our Favorites
Our Obsidian Carbon Fiber Ring is made from specially infused premium grade carbon-fiber composite materials. Its distinctive faceted finish mimics that of ancient obsidian jewelry. The result is a fierce and distinctive black ring. If you prefer a carbon fiber wedding band with a smoother finish, our Pure Carbon Fiber Ring is a great alternative to its obsidian counterpart. In terms of strength, this is less likely to get damaged and scratched compared to other options.
If you prefer a more complex ring, our Carbon Fiber, Rose Gold, and Maple Ring is a popular pick. This hybrid ring made of carbon fiber and maple emphasizes the contrast between the organic and the artificial. The middle of the ring has 10K Rose gold accent and highlights one's affinity for carbon fiber. This ring is incredibly resilient thanks to its interior lining of carbon content. We have many different styles based off of this design that swap out the maple for other exotic materials like meteorite, opal, and trustone.
Carbon Fiber Necklaces
Carbon fiber necklaces are awesome. They have all the benefits that come with carbon fiber. They're incredibly strong and lightweight. This makes them perfect for those who want a necklace that won't weigh them down or break easily. Carbon fiber is an excellent conductor of intense heat and electricity. This means that a carbon fiber necklace against your chest can technically help dissipate body heat. This is perfect for those who are active or play sports. Carbon fiber necklaces have an unbeatable look that's both stylish and modern too.
One of our most popular starter pendants is our Carbon Fiber Bar Pendant. It's a lightweight and durable pendant that comes with a durable steel box chain. Its exterior has an incredibly glossy appearance that'll catch anybody's eye.
The Gold Burl Carbon Fiber Bar Pendant is a simple and lightweight pendant made from recycled carbon fiber. You'll see it cased in resin gold colored brass. It's a step above our Carbon Fiber Bar Pendant in terms of material composition. Its polished carbon fiber finish and durable chain are built to last a lifetime. The best part about it? It needs little to no maintenance.
