Best Way to Find Your Ring Size
Going shopping for an engagement ring or wedding ring is already quite overwhelming as it is, especially when the ring in question is the ring that will change your life forever. Taking the easy way out and getting the average ring size may sound tempting, but realizing later on that you’ve spent a hefty amount on a size 7 women's ring or a size 9 men's ring that doesn’t fit definitely sounds like a nightmare. Tips Before Sizing!
Before using our ring sizer, be sure to take note of these reminders to ensure that your measurements are as accurate as possible!
- First and most obvious tip: measure on the correct hand, as the fingers on your dominant hand are most likely slightly larger compared to your non-dominant hand.
- Determine your finger type. You may have tapered fingers that widen toward the base, or knotted fingers where your knuckles are wide.
- Observe whether your fingers swell during physical activity. Your fingers tend to change sizes throughout the day possibly due to things like your medication, the weather, or your hormones. It would be a good idea to measure your fingers multiple times (3 or 4 times to be exact, but feel free to do more) to find the correct size! We recommend measuring your fingers at the end of the day when you’re relaxed and are at a normal body temperature!
- Take into consideration that thinner bands are slightly larger, and thicker bands fit tighter! Be sure to discuss with your jeweler on whether or not you should opt for a slightly smaller ring size for thinner bands, and opt for a larger ring size for a thicker band.
- Measuring your knuckle size is just as important, especially when you have knuckled fingers! Measure the area where your ring will sit as well as your knuckle size, then choose the size in between those measurements. Don’t forget to check if the sizer can slide through your knuckle without too much difficulty!
- Our measurements come in US Standard ring sizes, but our sizing chart has all the information you need for international sizes as well!
How to Find Your Ring Size With Our Ring Sizer
If you have one of our ring sizers and you’re ready to measure your finger, it is thankfully very easy to use. Here is our step by step guide on finding your ring size with our ring sizer!
- Form a circle by placing the end of the sizer in through the hole and in the notch.
- Slide your finger inside and tighten the sizer by pulling the end until it is snug and fits comfortably.

How to Find Your Ring Size With a String and a Ruler
Of course, there are other easy alternatives to finding out what your ring size is without getting a ring sizer. Using string or a strip of paper along with a ruler and a pen will do just fine, although you may want to confirm your measurements with a jeweler to ensure accuracy! This method should also work with a tape measure should you choose to use that instead!
- Wrap the string/the paper/the tape measure around the area where you would like your ring to sit.
- Use a pen to mark the point where the string or paper meet. Take note of the measurement when using a tape measure.
- Measure the length of the string or paper (in mm).
- Refer to the sizing chart and pick the size that is closest to your measurement (Remember: if you’re unsure about your size, a general rule is to size up--adjusting a larger ring is easier than resizing a smaller ring).
- Do confirm your size with a jeweler for this method if you can!
- Send your ring size over to support@patrickadairdesigns.com. Again, feel free to send us pictures of your measurements as well if you would like to make sure.
How to Find Your Size With an Already Existing Ring
Maybe you don’t need to measure your fingers, maybe you already have a ring you can use for reference! Other than making things a hundred times simpler for you, this method is also a good way to get your partner’s ring size without them knowing (if you were thinking of surprising them in the first place)! You really wont need much other than the ring, a ruler, and the sizing chart.
- With your ruler, measure the inner diameter of your ring.
- Take note of the measurement and check our sizing chart.
- Find the size closest to your measurement (Remember: if you’re unsure about your size, a general rule is to size up--adjusting a larger ring is easier than resizing a smaller ring).
