What to Consider When Buying Custom Made Jewelry

Jewelry has been an integral part of women's, and more recently, men's fashion. Many fashion enthusiasts will tell you that an outfit is not complete without it. If you're looking to make a bold statement, you may find an interest in custom jewelry.

Custom jewelry offers a unique yet fashionable way of expressing yourself. Though jewelry trends come and go, custom pieces remain timeless and are often very personal to the owner.

Patrick Adair Designs specializes in custom made jewelry. This article covers some jewelry buying tips when looking for your next piece. Read on and find out more with our custom jewelry buying guide!

Start With a Budget

Every new investment starts with a budget. If you're buying custom made jewelry for the first time, it's always best to have a budget. A jewelry design may get more expensive as you choose more customizations.

The cost of a custom jewelry piece comes from the time and labor it takes to make it. Before deciding on a design, it's best to have a budget first.

This helps keep you on track and narrow down your customization options. You can contact us for a ballpark estimate. This can give you some idea of how much you may spend on a certain design.

Timeline

Don't forget to take your timeline into consideration if you're getting a piece for an event. If you're looking to get custom made engagement rings, don't expect them to arrive within the next day. The time it takes to make a custom piece will vary depending on complexity of design, materials required, etc.

The average time we need for a custom order is roughly six weeks. If you have a more complex project in mind, this may take up to or more than eight weeks.

It's always best to play it safe by giving us or any other jeweler a buffer period of a few months. Even if things pan out slower than expected, you will still be able to receive your custom piece in time.

Sketch Out Your Design

When customizing jewelry, it's good practice to do research first. This will allow you to gather ideas to come up with a design you're happy with. Your preferred style may vary from vintage, modern, and other types of jewelry.

However, an idea may sometimes not be enough. Asking your jeweler for something unique may produce various results. If you don't have any specifications for your custom design, create a sketch instead.

You may also create a collage using images you used for inspiration. This can range from mixed metals and organic lines to filigrees. If you want to get your dream custom jewelry, you need to know how to communicate your idea.

Getting a Custom Ring From Patrick Adair Designs

One of the most unique parts about Patrick Adair Designs is our ability to create custom rings. When Patrick Adair Designs first started in 2015 all of our business was commission based (no two rings were ever alike).

We currently offer three different options for custom rings. You can get a custom Glowstone ring (this process is very simple and pricing is streamlined). You can have a ring customized by one of our artisans in the shop (this process is a little more complex and varies on price a little more). The third option is you can apply for a ring to be made us and featured in a YouTube video (this process is very complex and fairly expensive)!

We really pride ourselves on our ability to create custom wedding bands at Patrick Adair Designs. If you can dream it, we can most likely achieve it! Unlike other jewelry stores, we handmake every single piece of jewelry. This means that every piece is high quality and one-of-a-kind. Our craftsmen make every piece deliberately, with thought and integrity. Most big name jewelry stores will manufacture their rings through machines in a boring way. At Patrick Adair Designs, craftsmanship matters the most.

Aftercare and Warranties

One of the very first things you need to look into when commissioning  a custom piece from a jewelry designer is their Warranty Policy. A Warranty Policy is essential to protect your investment, even with a trusted jeweler.

Check if your jeweler or retailer provides aftercare or warranties. It will give you an idea of what the jeweler can do if you need to resize your ring. If you're getting your custom piece insured, note that it's custom made.

Patrick Adair Designs offers a full Lifetime Warranty on every single product, custom pieces included. Custom rings are not eligible for a size exchange, however to ensure you order the correct size, you can be sent a free ring sizing kit before your ring is made.
